Col Amit Bisht, Sena Medal an alumni of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun was commissioned into First Battalion the Mahar Regiment in June 1998. An avid mountaineer, he has been an instructor at the High Altitude Warfare School, Gulmarg and the Siachen Battle School. He is an experienced aviator with more than 3500 hours of flying Army Aviation Helicopters over mountainous terrain ranging from the Siachen Glacier to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Prior to his appointment as the Principal of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Col Amit Bisht had been supervising the efforts of the Indian Army sportspersons as the Director of its Mission Olympics project for the past two years.

Having gathered vast experience in the field of mountaineering, he has successfully scaled  and summitted several peaks  including  Mt Kamet,  Mt Trishul,  Mt Trimukhi,  Mt Momba  and   Mt Blanc (France). He has explored & trekked over uncharted terrain in The Great Himalayas extensively. He led the first ever expedition to the virgin peak Mt Trimukhi (6422m) which has been endorsed in the Limca Book of Records in 2012. He also organized and led his team to scale Mt Harsil Horn in 2019 in Gangotri valley with UTDB. In the year 2020 he led and summitted three unscaled peaks Naga, Ku and an Unnamed peak in Nelang Valley. The same year together with ITBP he led Joint Watershed Patrol cum Expedition to six unscaled peaks above 6000m along China border. In 2021 he led a small team of six NIM and JIM&WS instructors to summit Mount Everest in adverse conditions of inclement weather and Covid pandemic. Till date he carried out First ascent to 16 unclimbed and unchartered peaks in India.

Recently on 13 Nov 21 Col Amit Bisht conferred with the TENZING NORGAY NATIONAL ADVENTURE AWARD which is most prestigious award in the field of adventure by Hon'ble President of India Sh Ram Nath Kovind. 

For his unrelenting efforts and dedication to duty Col Bisht has been twice awarded with Chief of Army Staff  Commendation Card, with GOC-in-C Commendation Card four times and once  with DG ITBP commendation roll.
