Methods of Instruction Course

 

The aim of this course is to prepare mountaineers, for becoming potential Instructors, as for many it’s a career opportunity in mountaineering and allied sports.

 

Besides theory, detailed practical training is also imparted to trainees by giving them sufficient opportunities to handle training sessions design training schedules and plans under close supervision of NIM instructional staff.

 

Trainees graded 'A' only in the Advance Mountaineering Course from NIM, HMI Darjeeling, JIM Pehalgam, ITBP training Auli, MAS Manali and SGMI, Gangtok , AMI, Siachen and HAWS Gulmarg are eligible for this course.

Day by Day Activities of Method of Instruction Course

Day 01

Arrival, Reception and Instructions about Course.

 

Day 02-03

 

NIM

Physical Exercise, Hill Walk with loaded rucksack, Distribution into Ropes, Visit to NIM Campus, Administrative Talk cum Opening Address, Issue of Equipment, Medical Inspection, Lecture on Method of Instruction Planning (Part-I & II),  Lecture on  Block & Detailed Syllabus, Revision of all Rope knots and Rope Coiling,  Briefing for First Outing, Entrance Test, Visit to NIM Souvenirs & Museum,  Deposition of Cash & Valuables, Games/Library.

 

Day 04

NIM LECTURE, DEMONSTRATION AND PRACTICE 

 

Cleaning/Layout of Hostel, Physical Training, Artificial Rock wall climbing (In Door/ Out Door), Rope Knots/Coiling, Roping up, Fault Finding Exercise, Games/Library and Preparation for Lesson Plan for Next Day.

 

Day 05 - 11

TEKHLA TRAINING AREA (HEIGHT 4,200FT. TIME 02hrs) LECTURE, DEMONSTRATION  AND  PRACTICE

Trek to Tekhla Training Area, Lecture/Demonstration on Free Climbing, Chimney Climbing, Anchoring, Belaying, Assimilation and De-briefing/Briefing and Return to NIM by Bus, Games and Library.  

 

TEKHLA TRAINING AREA (HEIGHT 4,200FT. TIME 02 hrs) LECTURE, DEMONSTRATION  AND  PRACTICE

 

Trek to Tekhla Training Area, Lecture/Demonstration on Rappelling, Jummaring, Stance Management and use of Riversso, Rock Craft Fault Finding Exercise, Rock Terminology, Assimilation and De-briefing / Briefing and Return to NIM by Bus, Fitting of Crampons and Gaiters, Exchange of Equipment, Briefing for Move to Mountain and preparation for move to the Mountain.  

 

Day 12

NIM Cleaning/Layout of Hostel, Physical Training, Lecture on Map Reading I & II, Lecture on Mountain Hazards, Briefing for move to mountain and preparation for move to mountain, Games and Library.

 

Day 13

TEL CAMP (HEIGHT-8,200 FT) : TIME- 5hrs 

 

Move to Bhuki by bus, trek to Tel camp, Establishment of camp and Mechanics of Conduct of Approach March.

 

Day 14

BASE CAMP (HEIGHT 12,300 FT, TIME- 03 hrs)

 

Trek to Base Camp, Continuous Map Reading, Establishment of camp, Lecture on Glacier and Avalanche.

 

Day 15-17

ICE CRAFT(LECTURE/DEMONSTRATION AND PRACTICE) 

 

Tip Toe Climbing, Two Piton Climbing, Fixed Rope, Artificial Climbing, Revision of Ice Anchors, “C & Z” Pulley, Lecture on G.P.S./Map Reading, Mountain Safety, Quiz Test (Medical/Mountaineering and General Aspects), and Ice Craft Fault Finding Exercise.  Lecture on Mountain Hazards,  Mountain Terminology, Ice Axe, Ice Hammer and Rope.

 

SNOW CRAFT  

 

Lecture/Demonstration of Self & Team Arrest, Anchoring/Belaying, Snow Craft Fault Finding Exercise, De-briefing / Briefing, Final Written Test /  Feed Back.

 

Day 18

Return to Tel Camp, Establishment of Camp and Rehearsal of Graduation Ceremony.

 

Day 19-21

 

NIM

 

Trek to Bhuki, Move to NIM by Bus, Maintenance of Equipments, Return of Equipments, Medical Inspection, Collection of Cash & Valuables, Visit to Local place of Interest, Principal ’s Interview, De-briefing, Visit to NIM Souvenirs Shop, Rehearsal of Graduation Ceremony, Issue of NIM Jersey and preparation for Graduation Ceremony. Graduation Ceremony, Tea with Chief Guest, Group Photograph with Chief Guest and  Return of NIM Jersey.

Day 22

DISPERSAL After morning Tea.
