The proposal to have a mountaineering Institute at Uttarkashi was mooted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1964. Uttarkashi was specially selected as the home of NIM, primarily because of its close proximity to the Gangotri region in western garhwal, which undoubtedly has the best climbing and training potential in India and perhaps in the world. The institute was raised in the year 1965 and was established in Gyansu. Later in 1966 Ladari reserved forest area was chosen for the institute. In a historic development in November 2001, with the newly formed State of Uttaranchal coming into existence, the Chief Minister of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) became the Vice President of the Institute.

COURSES OFFERED

Adventure

The Adventure Course is designed for school students and adults who are exposed to various outward bound activities like trekking, rock climbing, camping, cooking, navigation, study of flora and fauna and their conservation.

Mountaineering

The Mountaineering Courses includes Basic Mountaineering Course, Advance Mountainering Course, Search & Rescue Course and Method of Instruction. Basic course is the foundation course of mountaineering.

Sport Climbing

Sport Climbing is a budding sport and recently introduced in Olympics. NIM Introduced Sport Climbing Course in its regular curriculum in 2020 and conducts 02 batches of Sport Climbing Course every year.

Skiing

Skiing has always been a sport of thrill and speed and has always been an attraction for adventure enthusiasts. NIM conducts skiing course during the month of Jan - Feb every year depending on the condition of snow.

Mountain Biking

NIM introduced Mountain Terrain Biking (MTB) Course in its curriculum in 05 March 2023. MTB course conducted on the tough trails of Uttarkashi giving a exposure to Mountain Biking to its trainees in the Himalayas.

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is rated as one of the best mountaineering institutes in India and also considered as the most prestigious mountaineering institute in Asia.

The proposal to have a mountaineering Institute at Uttarkashi was mooted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1964. Uttarkashi was specially selected as the home of NIM, primarily because of its close proximity to the Gangotri region in western garhwal, which undoubtedly has the best climbing and training potential in India and perhaps in the world. Perched beautifully on the turtle back hill across the east bank of river Bhagirathi, the Institute overlooks the sacred town of Uttarkashi and the confluence of Indravati with the Bhagirathi.

The Institute is headed by a Principal who is handpicked officer by the Ministry of Defence. It has Training and an Administrative wing. The Training Wing comprises of the Vice Principal, the Medical Officer, the intrepid NIM instructional and Kitchen staff. The Administrative Wing which deals with account, rations and equipment are looked after by the Registrar and the Equipment Officer, respectively.
